The properties of aluminum nitride

Aluminum nitride (Ani) is an inorganic mixture of nitrogen and Aluminum. It belongs to the structure of the wurtzite crystalline structure and has a bandgap that is 6 eV at room temperature. This makes it ideal for use in the domain of deep ultraviolet optoelectronics. It is also used by circuits in semiconductors.

Aluminum Nitride is a dense technical ceramic material which is available in thin and thick varieties. It is manufactured through an enzymatic reduction process. This process, however, can be costly, therefore an easier method of preparation is required to be researched. Aluminum nitride is found in almost every metal. It is a gray-white to white powder. It is soluble in water as well as inorganic acids. It is, however, unstable in a hydrogen atmosphere. It's also highly flammable.

It is used for mobile phones, to form radio frequency filters. It is also used in robotics and medical imaging. The piezoelectric properties it has are utilized in bulk thin-film acoustic Resonators.

It has been reported that the bulk of current research focuses on the creation of semiconductor (GaN or AlGaN) made LEDs which work in the ultra-violet, which means that the wavelength of light is 250 nm. In May 2006, it was announced that an inefficient dimer could emit light at around 210 nanometers. A single crystal of aluminum nitride includes an energy gap that is 6.2eV as measured by ultraviolet vacuum reflectance. Theoretically this allows waves with wavelengths in the range of 200 nanometers to be able to pass through. However, when it is implemented commercially it will require a lot of hurdles to be resolved. Aluminum nitride is widely used in optoelectronic engineering, such as inductive layers in optical storage interfaces as well as electronic chip carrier substrates that have excellent thermal conductivity and military applications.
